Code Enforcement Changes

inspectionsBeginning December 23, 2011, the City of Vicksburg will be enforcing the 2009 International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Fuel Gas Code, International Plumbing Code, International Mechanical Code, International Existing Building Code, International Property Maintenance Code and the 2008 National Electrical Code.

Officials Visit One of City's Oldest Residents

Tom Lwwis 103 Years OldMayor Paul Winfield and Alderman Michael Mayfield took time Monday to visit one of Vicksburg's oldest residents. Mr. Tom Lewis, a lifelong city resident, recently celebrated his 103rd birthday. When asked by Alderman Mayfield about the secret to his longivity, Mr. Lewis quickly said "hard work, I was never afraid of working hard".

Port of Vicksburg: 11th Most Active Inland Port

A recent article posted in the Delta Business Journal touted the importance of the Delta's Ports and in particular the Port of Vicksburg. The port at Vicksburg is one of 16 ports in Mississippi, and one of six along the Mississippi River. It's the 11th most active inland port in the U.S. Not only is Vicksburg served by a class-1 rail service, but they are also a designated foreign trade zone as well. As far as rail goes, the Vicksburg port features the only railway that crosses over the Mississippi River between Memphis and Baton Rouge, and that’s significant when it comes to moving goods. Mayor Interviewed About Sportsplex

Mayor Paul Winfield Sportsplex Interview Mayor Paul Winfield plans to ask local State lawmakers to back a bill to allow the City to increase taxes to build a sports complex consisting of baseball, softball and soccer fields and a walking trail. Currently there is a two (2%) percent tax on hotels and a one (1%) percent tax on local restaurants and bars. Mayor Winfield's proposed bill would raise the hotel tax to four (4%) percent and the restaurant tax to two and one half (2.5%) percent.

VPD Mourns Loss Of Retired Officer

vpdbadgeiconThe Vicksburg Police Department mourns the passing of John Martin Janotta Sr. , who died Nov. 30, 2011. "Janotta", as he was called, was a retired police officer who returned as a court bailiff. He will be truly missed.

Dr. Martin Luther King Parade

mlk paradeThe 8th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade in historic downtown Vicksburg is on 01/14/2012 at 2:00 pm. This year's theme is "The Dream Continues, Let Freedom Ring!" Donations and sponsors may contact Sylvester Walker at 601-678-8263. Applications may be picked up at 1108 Farmer Street. Applications can be dropped off at 1108 Farmer Street or faxed to (601) 636-4757.

Home Buyer Education Workshop

Potential home buyers may attend a home buyer education class which consist of 8 hours of home ownership education counseling. Those participating will learn about budgeting, debt management, credit reports, financing a home, home maintenance, mortgage loans, insurance, taxes and much more. A certificate of completion can be obtained by participants who attend all 8 hours. The nationally accredited curriculums were developed by NeighborWorks of America and FDIC and are approved by HUD. Approximately 4 classes are held per year, usually one per quarter, on a Saturday from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Space is limited therefore participants must pre-register.

Mardi Gras Parade


mardigras ParadeDowntown Vicksburg's Annual Mardi Gras Parade will be 02/18/2012 at 4:00 p.m. in Downtown Vicksburg. All area Clubs, Churches, Organizations, Schools, Dance/Drill Teams, and Businesses are invited to take place in this community parade. The parade begins at Washington and Belmont streets and will travel North on Washington Street to Jackson Street.
