Mayor Paul Winfield plans to ask local State lawmakers to back a bill to allow the City to increase taxes to build a sports complex consisting of baseball, softball and soccer fields and a walking trail.
Currently there is a two (2%) percent tax on hotels and a one (1%) percent tax on local restaurants and bars. Mayor Winfield's proposed bill would raise the hotel tax to four (4%) percent and the restaurant tax to two and one half (2.5%) percent.
The City would borrow $18.5 million to $19.5 million needed for construction, which would be repaid over 15 years with the increased taxes on hotels, restaurants and bars. Mayor Winfield says the increases would be removed once the loan is paid off. The location of the proposed sportsplex has not been released yet.
