VPD donates Surplus Radar to Canton PD PDF Print E-mail

Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong met with Canton Assistant Police Chief Juan Cloy, on yesterday to pass on to their police department surplus radars that are no longer being used by the VPD. The radars are not compatible with the VPD ICOP systems and were given to the Canton Police department.

150th Anniversary of the Union Assaults Against Vicksburg PDF Print E-mail

On Saturday, May 18, 2013, Vicksburg National Military Park will present a special Sesquicentennial ranger program on the Union Assaults against Vicksburg, as well as the beginning of siege operations, from 7:00pm until 9:00pm at the park's Visitor Center on Clay Street. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. Doors will open at 6:30pm. This event is open to the public and will be free of charge.

There will also be ranger walks and programs at the actual locations of the assaults and heaviest fighting on the anniversary dates and times as follows:

Members of the law enforcement and justice community honored their "TOP COP" Wednesday, May 15, 2013. Governor Phil Bryant, Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves along with area district attorneys and U.S. Attorney Greg Davis gathered to honor the top officers from around the State. Among the law enforcement officials nominated are officers from federal and state agencies as well as city and county law enforcement departments.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Class PDF Print E-mail

swimminglessonsVicksburg City Pool will hold an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Class from May 13 – May 22 at the facility on Lee Street. The 28 hour class will meet from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. each weekday afternoon and on Saturday, May 18 at a time to be determined. Veteran Lifeguard trainers Bob and Susan Athow and Sylvia Gurtowski will instruct. Cost of the class is $115 and is payable to the City of Vicksburg.

To be eligible for the class candidates should be at least 15 years old by May 22, 2013. Before admission to the course each student will be asked to complete a 300 yard swim using front crawl and breaststroke; tread water with legs only for two minutes; and complete a timed exercise swimming with a 10 pound object.

The class is limited to 15 students. To register please call the City Pool at 601-634-4516. If no answer, please leave a message.

Vicksburg Main Street invites the public to come to Lillian's Restaurant on Wednesday, April 3rd from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and purchase a spaghetti lunch. There will be a silent auction. WASHINGTON – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are partnering to improve public awareness for National Flood Safety Awareness Week, March 18-22, 2013. The agencies' goal is to improve understanding about flood risk among individuals, families, businesses and communities. Knowledge and the right precautions can protect families, homes and finances.

City of Vicksburg Water and Gas customers have another option to pay their utility bills. Beginning today, bills may be paid through an automated telephone system. This option joins other convenient ways for paying the bills including via the city website, automatic bank draft, and automatic credit card payments. Customers may also choose paperless billing and receive their bills via email.

Vicksburg has been named by AAA Southern Traveler and AAA Midwest Traveler as one of the top 13 places to visit in 2013. Other destinations named include Christchurch, New Zealand, the Dominican Republic, Ireland, Mexico, Orlando, Panama, San Francisco, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Las Vegas.

This year brings lots of excitement to Vicksburg with Civil War sesquicentennial commemoration events. Events start in April with Tapestry: The Pilgrimage to Vicksburg and the Vicksburg Heritage Fair and continue until July 4, the anniversary of the Siege of Vicksburg's surrender.

mardigrasThe Vicksburg Main Street Program is looking for "krewes" who wish to participate in Downtown Vicksburg's 12th annual Mardi Gras Parade. The parade will be held Saturday, February 9, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. in Downtown Vicksburg.

The parade begins at Washington and Belmont streets and will travel North on Washington Street to Jackson Street. The cost is $25 for non-profits and $50 for businesses.
