After 32 years of selfless, dedicated service to the City of Vicksburg, Information Technology Director Billy Gordon retired on January 29, 2016.
In a surprise ceremony held in the City of Vicksburg Board Room, Billy was honored for his decades –long tenure with the town’s local government. Hearty laughs were shared and tears flowed freely as many in the packed to capacity Board Room paid tribute to their longtime co-worker, mentor, and friend on his last official day of work.
As testimony to the amount of respect his co-workers, both past and present, have for Billy every seat in the room was taken, friends, and co-workers were standing on the wall, and several were watching from the hallway outside the Board Room as Mayor Flaggs and Aldermen Mayfield and Thompson presented him with a Resolution, the City’s highest commendation.
Billy is the City of Vicksburg’s first Information Technology Director, a position he had held for 25 years. He began his career with the City of Vicksburg in 1984 as a Computer Programmer under Mayor Demery Grubbs. His time with the City spanned six administrations. He is credited with saving the City of Vicksburg thousands of dollars monthly by implementing various projects and programs including AVL, KRONOS, and VOiP Telephone. He also personally wrote customized computer programs for several City Departments.
Bringing the City of Vicksburg up to date with fast-paced technology is also credited to Billy. He was the driving force behind the development of public information outlets TV23 and City of Vicksburg Action Line. As Project Manager, he led the implementation of In-dash car video equipment and the recently adopted body camera system for the Vicksburg Police Department. Billy led the process of automating the Police Department as well as the Vicksburg Fire Department with in-car computers. He was behind the installation of city-wide video surveillance equipment used for added safety and security.
Billy kept the City of Vicksburg on the cutting edge of information access by devoting countless hours to the development of the official City of Vicksburg Webpage. He also brought WI-FI to select locations for citizens’ use. He lassoed social media by constructing facebook pages for select departments and most recently, creating an “Information by Text” program where important City information such as road closures and boil water notices can be instantly received by all subscribers.
These are but a few of Billy Gordon’s achievements while working at the City of Vicksburg.
He has earned the friendship, trust and respect of countless co-workers. Not only for his knowledge and ability to work magic with technology, but also for the type of person he is. No project is ever too minor. If it is important to someone; it’s important to Billy. He has a great deal of patience when working with those less computer literate. And he never, ever, makes one feel less than brilliant while working with him. That is a talent, and a gift in itself.
Although employees of the City of Vicksburg wish Billy all the best in his well earned retirement, it will be quite a while before the City adjusts to its new dynamic. So many depended upon Billy to “fix it” or “show me how”. We will all just have to be big kids now and pull up our boot straps, roll up our sleeves, and plunge ahead. It is certain, The City of Vicksburg, in time, will find its way.
Billy will be enjoying his retirement with his lovely wife, Tracy; sons Kyle, Matthew, and Reed; daughters in-law Erin and Brittney; grandchildren Wyatt Flynn and Baby Gordon who is due later this year; and his beautiful mother, Marie Gordon.
Thank you, Billy. You have made a difference in more lives than you will ever know.
