Board Honors Local Rhodes Scholar
Donald M. "Field" Brown, a double-major senior at Mississippi State, was honored by the City Board with a proclamation declaring January 6, 2014, "Donald M. Brown" Day in Vicksburg. Donald received the coveted Rhodes Scholarship, which is widely considered the world's most celebrated and prestigious international fellowship. Donald credits his success, in part, to the education he received at Vicksburg High School. "I'm very honored. My classes at Vicksburg High School prepared me for my further education," said Brown as he spoke to a packed board room.
Ameristar Casino Executive Chef, Jerrold Brooks, and Public Relations Manager, Lori Burke, presented Jennifer Harper of the Vicksburg Senior Center with a monetary donation and a box of fresh baked goods at the January 10th board meeting. Accompanied by a group of senior center regulars, Chef Brooks presented the baked goods to the Mayor and Aldermen. Ameristar has been a longtime supporter of the Vicksburg Senior Center.
Thompson Appointed to National League of Cities Finance, Administration & Intergovernmental Relations Steering Committee
Alderman Willis Thompson has been appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) 2014 Finance, Administration & Intergovernmental Relations Steering Committee. This committee has the lead responsibility for developing NLC federal policy positions on issues involving national economic policy, general financial assistance programs, liability insurance, intergovernmental relations, census, municipal bonds and capital finance, municipal management, antitrust issues, citizen participation and civil rights, labor relations, Native American sovereignty and municipal authority. The appointment was announced by NLC President Chris Coleman, Mayor, St. Paul, Minnesota.
Downtown Vicksburg's 13th Annual Mardi Gras Parade will be held Saturday, March 1, 2014, at 4:00 p.m. in Downtown Vicksburg. All area clubs, churches, organizations, schools, dance/drill teams, and businesses are invited to take place in this community parade. The deadline to submit an application is Wednesday, February 19, 2014. The fee is $25 for non-profit and civic groups and $50 for businesses. After Wednesday, February 19, 2014, the fee is $50 for non-profit and civic groups and $100 for businesses.

Memphis, TN (January 25, 2014) - The 30th International Blues Challenge (IBC) - the world's largest gathering of blues acts - concluded its five-day run on world famous Beale Street in downtown Memphis with a full day of performances before a full house at the Orpheum Theatre. Narrowed from a record 255 acts from 40 states and 16 countries (and four continents), the 8 solo/ duo and 9 band finalists vied for the top prizes before an esteemed panel of judges. 35th Annual Run Thru History
The 35th Annual Run Thru History 10K Run, 5K Walk and 1-Mile Fun Run, presented by the Vicksburg YMCA, will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 in the Vicksburg National Military Park. Proceeds benefit the YMCA and the Military Park. Race begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at the Battlefield Inn with live music, awards and refreshments. Mississippi's First Lady Visits Bowmar
Mississippi First Lady, Deborah Bryant, visited Bowmar Avenue Elementary where she read to a group of 1st grade students. The stop in Vicksburg was part of the First Lady's "Read Across MS" campaign. Because of her interest and commitment to education, Mrs. Bryant plans to read to students (K-3) in all of Mississippi's 82 counties.
TV23 is a full production Government Access Cable Television Station. We provide quality programs covering local issues and items of interest. Residents who subscribe to cable television service can view these programs on Government Channel 23. Live broadcasts consist of city board meetings, budget hearings, area organizational meetings and various other public meetings held in the city council board room and area offices. Special community related programs and notices are also provided that are beneficial to the community. A community calendar of events is also provided.
The Jackson Street Center in downtown Vicksburg is a place where youth and adults alike can enjoy activities such as basketball, ping pong and card games. It is a great place to hold meetings and dance practice. The Aeolian Apartments are now officially open! The Aeolian is a 60-unit affordable senior housing development in downtown Vicksburg, MS. This housing development is a Historical renovation of the original Aeolian Apartments that was built in 1924. This renovation brings the life of this once luxury downtown development back to its original form with many modern amenities.
