TOMBSTONE RECORDS (THROUGH 1985) AND REFERENCE MAP

Cedar Hill (City) Cemetery Division tombstone records are made available for public use by the City of Vicksburg through the City’s WEB site. The original source for these tombstone records is the 1985 typed manuscript books authored by Mr. Walter and Mrs. Annie Salassi, now deceased.

The City obtained permission to publish these records to the internet from the Salassi heirs who believe it is in accordance with the purpose the Salassis’ set out to accomplish in recording tombstone information of the City’s Cedar Hill Cemetery. This intent was first demonstrated by the Salassis’ by giving copies of the manuscripts to the Vicksburg-Warren Public Library and the Old Courthouse Museum, as well as to others. Release of these records for public use honors the diligent efforts of Walter and Annie Salassi, who demonstrated their love and understanding of the value of knowing one’s history - family, period and site.

The City of Vicksburg recognizes and appreciates the dedication and diligence shown by the Salassis’, the Vicksburg Genealogical Society and others who were involved in the field work, research and the recording of the tombstones.

The City, along with the heirs to Walter and Annie Salassi, do not assume any responsibility for any inaccuracies in the data. These records are for general reference information and any information should be verified by his or her personal field work, along with the use of other sources. The Salassi heirs understand and do hope that corrections will be made to the information based on verification made by descendents or their representatives. The City plans to make a means whereby such records can be corrected.

The Salassis’ records reference their researched original purchaser information which does not necessarily match current ownership. Square and lot identification system coincides with their descriptions, not necessarily with purchases of land.

The City plans to publish the remainder of the Division tombstone records as they are made ready.

About Tombstone Reference Maps

Division Tombstone Reference Maps are being created for the purpose of assisting in the location of tombstones. These maps are based on the hand drawn maps by the Salassis’ as shown in the manuscript books, along with corrections based on the City’s own knowledge and that of the tombstone records.

This map is not to be construed as any reference to any legal description of land or ownership. This map is to be used solely in conjunction with these tombstone records.

Portions of these maps have some variations to the map drawn by the Salassis’ due in part to the shifting of land and additional or identified purchases and/or interments, etc.

The map displays Cemetery Street Names in "black" with a blue line, City Street Names are shown in "red" with a black line. Parts of Cemetery Streets displayed with a "red" line should not be driven or by vehicle.

The City encourages caution whenever driving and, when possible, walking on grass roads. The Cemetery speed limit is 10 mph.

The City plans to publish the remainder of Division Tombstone Reference Maps as they are made ready.

Divisions adjacent to Division A are as follows: Along the Eastern side is Division B, on the Northeastern side are Divisions B and G, and on the Western side across Lovers Lane is Division M.

Hard copies of the Salassis’ Tombstone Record manuscript books can be found in the reference room of the Vicksburg-Warren Public Library located at 700 Veto Street - 601-636-6411 and at the Old Courthouse Museum located at 1008 Cherry Street - 601-636-0741.
